More About First Lieutenant Dille

During his time at the university, First Lieutenant Dille was a member of the boxing team and was the captain of the swim team in 1938. Dille was a member of the school's ROTC and excelled there. He won an award of $25 from the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1938. Dille was called to active duty on Jan. 21, 1941, and ordered to report to Camp Grant, Illinois by Jan. 27. At Camp Grant, Dille continued to be an athletic trainer, becoming an athletic supervisor for the camp and a member of the Camp Grant Athletic Board. He also trained at Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. He served with the 10th infantry in Patton's 3rd Army in Iceland and France for two years. In the summer of 1943, Dille went overseas as a member of the 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division. After coming ashore at Normandy a month after D-Day, the 5th Infantry Division saw its first action. Vidouville, France in July 1944. Dilles, then a first lieutenant, fought through France until his unit came to the Moselle River near Metz, France. In early September 1944, the 10th Infantry Regiment crossed the Moselle River near Arry, France. It was met by German infantry and tanks on the other side. The 10th Infantry Regiment held on, though running low on munitions. He was killed on Sept. 11, 1944, near Hill 386 near Arry. Dille was initially interred at US Military Cemetery No. 1 in France but was reinterred at Avoca Cemetery in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, in 1949.
