Arden Darrel Daoust

Second Lieutenant Daoust enlisted into the US Army Air Forces on Nov. 9, 1942, at Madison, Wisconsin. He began his advanced training in Aerial Navigation at Hondo Field, Texas, in spring of 1944 and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in July 1944. He was stationed at Langley Field in Virginia when he married Carol Parks on Feb. 24, 1945. He went overseas with the 98th Bombardment Squadron of the 11th Bombardment Group that same year and flew as the navigator on B-24 Liberator bombers in the Pacific. After the war ended, on Oct. 10, 1945, 2nd Lieutenant Daoust was flying on the B-24J s/n 44-40491, nicknamed "Ginny" to ferry liberated American and British POWs to Manila when the formation they were in was hit by rough weather from Typhoon Ursula. Second Lieutenant Daoust's B-24, along with 5 other aircraft in his formation, were downed by the storm. No one was ever recovered, and Daoust, along with the crew of four other airmen and 20 POWs are still missing in action. 2nd Lieutenant Arden Darrel Daoust is memorialized at Bayside Cemetery in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, as well as the Tablets of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial in Honolulu, Hawaii.
