More About Private First Class Christensen

Private First Class Myron Reynolds Christensen was born on Dec. 16, 1923, to Albert E. Christensen and Vivian A. Christensen (née Reynolds) in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

He attended Madison's Central High School and UW Madison before being drafted into the US Army on Feb. 5, 1943. He attended training at Fort Sheridan, Camp Skokie Valley, Camp Gruber, and Camp Lee.

Christensen was sent overseas in late 1944 and arrived in France in December of that year.

Only a month later, on Jan. 25, 1945, Christensen was killed in action near Schweighausen, Germany. His outfit was counterattacking a German force when Christensen saw one of his comrades fall wounded by German fire. Christensen crawled 25 yards to his wounded comrade in order to apply a tourniquet while under a constant German mortar barrage. He stayed by the wounded man's side for four hours, using his rifle to direct friendly machine gun fire.

When he was finally relieved he stood up and was killed by a hidden German soldier. He had saved the life of his comrade but lost his in the process.

For his actions, Christensen was awarded the Silver Star.

Private First Class Myron R. Christensen is buried in the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial in Lorraine, France.
