More About Private First Class Christensen
Private First Class Christensen studied agricultural economics and agricultural journalism while attending the university. He participated in the Wisconsin Country Magazine and the Daily Cardinal. He was also part of the 4-H Club, Blue Shield, and Saddle and Sirloin.
Christensen enlisted into the US Army on Dec. 9, 1941, at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. He received training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. About one year after enlisting, he went overseas as a member of the 82nd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion in December 1942. He fought through Africa, Sicily, France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium. On Jan. 23, 1945, during the Battle of the Bulge, PFC Christensen's outfit found itself under intense German machine-gun fire near the Belgian town of Samree. Although warned to stay back, Christensen bravely ran straight into the enemy fire to rescue a wounded Army serviceman. While tending to the serviceman's wounds, he was killed by German rifle fire. For these actions, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Army's third-highest award for valor.
Christensen is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Somers, Wisconsin.
