More About First Lieutenant Celentano

First Lieutenant Louis S. Celentano enlisted into the US Army on May 15, 1942. He was selected to become an officer in the US Army Air Forces. After completing his training, he became a 1st lieutenant and became a bombardier on B-24 Liberator bombers. He was assigned to the 506th Bomb Squadron, 44th Bomb Group and flew missions over Europe.

On Oct. 30, 1944, he was flying in the B-24J s/n 44-10523 on a bombing mission targeting oil refineries in Hamburg and Ueterson, Germany. The plane went into a steep bank soon after Lt. Celentano declared "Bombs away!" and it did not recover.

1st Lieutenant Louis S. Celentano is buried at the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial in Liège, Belgium.
