More About Sergeant Bujak
Sergeant Gilbert Jerome Bujak enlisted in the US Marine Corps on July 29, 1942. He received training at MCB Pendleton in California. He became an engineer and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion Pioneers, 19th Marine Regiment during the Battle of Bougainville. He was later assigned to the Engineer Company of the 1st Marine Provisional Brigade, 4th Marine Regiment. The 4th Marine Regiment was formed from Marine Raider battalions. The Marine Raiders were elite Marine soldiers and formed the predecessor to today's Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC.)
It was with the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade that Sergeant Bujak would be killed on Aug. 8, 1944, during fierce fighting on Guam.
He is buried at Saint Adalberts Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
