Lt. Junior Grade Norman Richard Bensman attended Washington High School in Milwaukee before attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also attended the Midshipmen's School at Northwestern University. He was commissioned an ensign in the Navy Reserve in 1942. He was assigned to the USS Cory, DD 463. The Corry was hit numerous times by enemy fire and sunk in 1944. Lt. Junior Grade Bensman was among those service members who went missing that day.
