Less than one month after Victory in Europe Day, a bomb blast at U.S. military headquarters in Bremen, Germany, killed Office of Strategic Services Agent Hendrik Theodore de Hartog. Fourteen others died in the blast, which also injured 78 people. This was one of two mysterious explosions at the headquarters. De Hartog was appointed to the office in January 1945 and traveled overseas the next month. He graduated from Waupun High School and from the foreign relations department at UW-Madison. He worked at a life insurance company before enlisting.
