Private 1st Class Jerome Theodore Butts enlisted into the US Army on Nov. 9, 1943. After his training, he was assigned to Company L, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. The 18th Infantry Regiment was part of the force that stormed the infamous Omaha Beach on D-Day. From that point forward, the 18th was involved in continuous combat operations until the end of the war. As they pushed their way through Belgium, PFC Butts was killed by small arms fire on Jan. 15, 1945. He was initially interred in Belgium but was reinterred at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
