More About Private Velie

Private Velie was killed during four days of fighting in blinding rain and bitter cold when the 100th Division entered the line for the first time in the Vosges Mountains. Attacking SW out of the town of Baccarat, their objective was to break the German entrenched positions along 1,200 to 1,500 foot high ridges. By November 18, 1944 they outflanked the town of Raon l'Étape and broke the German winter lines in this sector, which was intended by the Germans to hold out until April of 1945.
