More About Lieutenant Junior Grade Vanderheiden

Lieutenant Junior Grade Vanderheiden entered service in January, 1943 and received his training at Northwestern University, Key West, FL, and Portland, ME. He was killed when his patrol ship the USS Eagle, a PE-56 patrol escort/sub-chaser, exploded off the coast of Maine. The explosion was determined to be caused by a torpedo fired from a German U-853 submarine. Of the 62 crew members aboard the Eagle, only 13 survived making this sinking the greatest loss of US Navy personnel in New England waters during WWII.
