After graduating from the university, Second Lieutenant Comins was admitted to the practice of law in August 1862.

Inscription on his tombstone: "In Memory of Lieut. Leander M. Comins. Son of Elijah & Content C. Comins. Born Dec. 4, 1834. Graduated at Wisconsin University, 1860: admitted to the practice of law in Aug 1862. Enlisted in the 1st D.C. Cavalry Jan. 15, 1864, and was commissioned 2nd Lieut. Co. D. in which he served with distinction until the Regt. was disbanded, transferred to Co. A. 1st Me. Cavalry where he served till March 31, 1865 when under Sheridan in taking the South Side Rail Road, in command of his Co. and leading his men in action he fell with a ball in his right thigh: was carried to City Point, where he died of his wound April 14th. Ever at his post of duty, honest and faithful in all his dealings, brave and patriotic he won the esteem of all his comrades and gave his life a sacrifice to his country's cause. Blessed be the memory of the Patriot Dead."
