More About Corporal Burns
Corporal Burns died in the Chaudfontaine Hospital as a result of shrapnel wounds received two days earlier while repairing a battery telephone line under bombardment. Due to his efforts, communication between neighboring American and French field artilleries was restored after being cut off for more than six hours by enemy action. He was cited for bravery in American and French dispatches dated March 7 and was awarded the Croix de Guerre on March 8, making him the first man of his regiment to win such a distinction.
