More About Lieutenant Junior Grade Avery
Avery was made ensign in December 1917 and later made assistant navigation officer on the “Sudberry.” Shortly before his death, he was commissioned lieutenant and transferred to the USS Hubbard.
Lieutenant Avery died of Spanish influenza aboard the USS Hubbard en route to France. In accordance with a wish he expressed shortly before his death, he is buried at Arlington Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
