First Lieutenant Charles Frederick Conner was born on Jan. 11, 1915, in Maywood, Illinois. He joined the US Army and went to Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, commissioning as a 1st lieutenant in late August of 1943. He deployed to the European Theater and was assigned to Co. A, 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. He was killed in action on Nov. 6, 1944, while his unit approached St. Remy, France. For his service, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's 2nd highest award for valor in combat. First Lieutenant Charles Frederick Conner is interred at Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva, Kane County, Illinois.
