Milo David Burgess

Milo Davis Burgess enlisted into the US Army during World War I. He went overseas to France as a Captain with Company H, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division. Burgess saw 23 months of service in France and was wounded in the Second Battle of the Somme. Upon his return to the States, he had been promoted to a 2nd lieutenant. He remained in the US Army Officer's Reserve following the war and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In between wars, he was a member of the faculty at Arsenal Technical High School in Indiana. In 1941, Burgess once again answered the call of his nation and went into active service, becoming inspector general of the 4th Armored Division at Camp Bowie, Texas. Lieutenant Colonel Burgess was found dead in his officer's quarters at Camp Bowie on Aug. 20, 1943. He had been serving in the Army for 25 years at the time of his death. Lieutenant Colonel Burgess is buried at Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana. Burgess' son, Bruce, was killed in action just a few months later on Oct. 14, 1943, when his plane went down over Italy on a volunteer mission.
