Second Lieutenant Walter Clyde Boyle enlisted into the US Army Air Corps Reserve on March 17, 1941, at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. He graduated as an aviation cadet on August 16, 1941, at Randolph Field, Texas. He was very proud of his service, so much so that he and two other men from the La Crosse/Sparta area penned a letter to their local Elk's Club encouraging others to join.
In October 1941, he was sent to Kelley Field in Texas for more training. He was transferred to Randolph Field and received his commission as a 2nd lieutenant on Oct. 30, 1941. On Feb. 11, 1942, 2nd Lieutenant Boyle and five of his fellow servicemen at Bradley Field, Connecticut, took off in an A-29A Bomber for a high-altitude, photographic mission. Sometime during the flight, the plane suffered a catastrophic failure and broke apart in the air. All onboard were killed. 2nd Lieutenant Walter C. Boyle is interred at the Catholic Cemetery of La Crosse in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
