While at the university, Ensign Behrens was in the advertising program, C.A.A., and a member of Delta Upsilon.

He enlisted into the US Navy Reserve on June 18, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois. He was called into active service on Nov. 27, 1941, the day after Thanksgiving. He was selected for Naval Aviation Training and received his training at Floyd Bennett Field in New York. Behrens received his commission in Miami, Florida. Ensign Behrens was killed when the plane he was piloting fell into the Chesapeake Bay off the coast of Virginia.
