More About Second Lieutenant Behl

Second Lieutenant Behl enlisted Oct. 8, 1942, in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Behl joined a college training detachment in Cleveland, Ohio, and was then sent to Maxwell Field in Alabama for pre-flight training. After receiving training at Bush Field Army Airfield in Georgia and Carlstrom Army Airfield in Florida, he earned his commission as a second lieutenant and received his pilot's wings at Moody Army Airfield in Georgia in February 1944. After a brief furlough and a visit to his family, he was sent to MacDill Army Airfield in Florida. He married Emily Indermuehle at Base Chapel No. 1 at MacDill Field on April 1, 1944. Shortly after, Behl was deployed to Europe where he served as a co-pilot on a B-17 Flying Fortress with the 570th Bomb Squadron, 390th Bomb Group. Second Lieutenant Behl was killed over France on Aug. 8, 1944. He never got to meet his daughter, who was born the following February. Behl is interred at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial in England.
