More About Major Ward

While attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Major Ward was a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity.

After the declaration of war, Ward immediately enlisted in the service and was sent to the First Officers’ Training Camp at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Upon completion of training he was commissioned captain and sailed for France.

In France, Major Ward was a member of the first unit of American men to be placed in the trenches on the front line. He was promoted to major on October 30, only to be killed a week later in the Verdun Sector. His grave at Hautmont bears the inscription: “Killed while gallantly leading his battalion in action.”
