Before entering aviation service, Lieutenant Gilmore served with the American Red Cross Ambulance Unit of the French Army for nine months. During this time, he was cited for services rendered near Verdun.

He died of pneumonia at the American Aviation Hospital near Issoudun. At the time, he was en route to the American aviation field at Issoudun, where he was going to serve as an instructor.
