More About First Lieutenant Fenelon

First Lieutenant Fenelon was a sophomore when he applied and was admitted to the First Officers’ Training Camp. Unfortunately, Fenelon was underweight at the time and was discharged from the camp three days before the close. He persisted, however, and enlisted in his home company of the National Guard of Wisconsin—with which he had previously served on the Mexican border. He sailed overseas on February 18, 1918 with the 32nd Division. After a month of guard duty in Bordeaux, his regiment moved up into Alsace-Lorrain. He was then promoted, first to sergeant and then to second lieutenant in Jul 1918.

While 50 yards ahead of his company, encouraging them forward into Fismes, a machine gun bullet wounded him. He was removed to Paris to be treated, but later died from his wounds. He was the first man to be promoted to First Lieutenant on French soil.
