Corporal Schley received a fatal wound to the neck during a heavy firefight.
Corporal Schley was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism while serving as a machine gun team leader with Company M, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam on April 30, 1967.
