More About Lieutenant Werner

Lieutenant Werner enlisted in the Army Air Forces in August, 1941, while a student at the University of Wisconsin. He left for active duty at Fresno, CA on February 24, 1942 and graduated from the advanced navigation school at Hondo, TX on February 26, with the rank of Second Lieutenant. He was sent overseas in August, 1944, and was a passenger on B-24G (#42-78140). Lt. Werner died in the "Line Of Duty" when the B-24 he was on experienced engine trouble and crashed into the Atlas Mountains in Algeria. The entire crew was killed in this crash. He was originally interred in Algeria and was later repatriated here on July 12, 1949.
