Staff Sergeant Otto completed his first year at University of Wisconsin-Madison before his induction on Feb. 10, 1943. Staff Sergeant Otto trained at Fort Sheridan, Ill., St. Petersburg, Fla., Scott Field, Ill., Fort Meyers, Fla., Lake Charles, La., and Savannah, Ga. He went to North Africa on June 5, 1944. From there, he went to Sardinia where he was a radio operator on a B-26. His parents last heard from him on Aug. 23, 1944. Otto was a radio operator on a B-26. Otto was declared Missing In Action when his B-26 developed engine trouble returning from a bombing mission over Sardinia and crashed at sea during the war. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre.
