Kenneth Patterson Swafford

Captain Swafford was a graduate of Madison East High School, and received his degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison medical school in 1942.

Capt. Swafford was a Medical Corps reservist, and received his commission as first lieutenant upon his graduation. While waiting for his call to active duty he interned at a California hospital in Los Angeles, and worked in the Douglas Aircraft medical department for two months. He was called to duty in August, 1943, and received his indoctrination training at Carlyle, PA. After going on maneuvers in Tennessee, and being stationed for a short time at Camp Atterbury, IN. He was then sent overseas and arrived in England in February, 1944. He landed in France about a week after D-Day and the last letter received from him was dated July 25.

Capt. Swafford was attached to an infantry medical unit, part of General Omar Bradley's army. He saw front-line service through the Cherbourg campaign and was believed to have been in the vicinity of St. Lô with an advanced Red Cross unit when he was killed.
