Lieutenant Colonel Straubel served as Commander of the 11th Bombardment Squadron and acting commander of the 7th Bombardment Group.

LTC Straubel's B-18 Bolo was shot down by Japanese Zeros near Surabaya, Java. He was able to crash land the plane but while he and his co-pilot attempted to extricate the other crew, both men were fatally burned and died the next morning in a Dutch Hospital. The Austin Straubel International Airport, near Green Bay, WI is named for him.
