Second Lieutenant Stewart was designated Naval Aviator #9760 in 1941. He entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet program. He was a marine fighter pilot and had been head flight officer of a squadron of more than 40 other pilots.

2d Lt. Stewart was killed in action in the Southwest Pacific.
