While at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Connolly was an instructor in telegraphy.
He sailed for France in October and was in Bordeaux when the armistice was signed. He then returned to New York in December and had been recommended for promotion as ensign.
It was while in New York that he caught pneumonia and later died at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital.
