Ensign Roberts saw active duty with the fleet in the Solomons.
Ens. Roberts was killed in action in the Pacific war theater, and is buried on a beach on Tulagi Island. A Cannon-class destroyer escort titled the USS Roberts (DE-749) was named in his honor. It was commissioned September 2, 1944, and decommissioned September 21, 1968.
