More About First Lieutenant Palfreyman
First Lieutenant Palfreyman enlisted in the 194th tank battalion, MO, in December, 1940, and served with the unit in Alaska for five months. The week after Pearl Harbor he returned to the states to take officer's training at Fort Knox, KY where he was graduated as a Second Lieutenant in April, 1942.
He was then sent to Camp Young, Indio, CA, where he received his desert training under Lt. Gen. George S. Patton. In July, 1942, he was sent to England and in January, 1943, entered the action in Africa. He served through the North African and Sicilian campaigns. Shortly after entering Italy he escaped with minor wounds when his tank was blown up. Following this action he was one of the men chosen to broadcast from Italy over an international hook-up.
1st Lt. Palfreyman was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the Fighting French after serving with one of their tank destroyer units in the Cassino area. He was killed in action on the Italian front.
