First Lieutenant Moths studied mechanical engineering and was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Before enlisting in the service, he was employed as a production and maintenance engineer for the General Foods Corp. in Battle Creek, Mich.

First Lieutenant Moths enlisted in June 1941. He received his wings at Foster Field, Victoria, Texas, in January 1942, and was promoted to first lieutenant in June 1942.

First Lt. Moths was killed in an army plane crash in Latin America.
