Ensign Lachmund studied Economics while at the university. During his senior year, he was the Chairman of orientation, the Winter Carnival Chairman, and the President of the Hoofers. He was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega.

Ensign Lachmund was originally listed as MIA when he went down with his ship, the USS Walke, in the fourth battle of Savo Island during the Guadalcanal campaign on Nov. 15, 1942. He is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery in Manila, Philippines.
