Harry Mears Hobbins, Jr.

Second Lieutenant Harry Hobbins Jr. was in the prime of his life, at 23 years old, a very bright, spry UW-Madison student-athlete. During his time at the university, Second Lieutenant Hobbins was a member of Delta Phi Epsilon. His parent Harry Sr. was a 3rd generation Madisonian, and wife Ethel Redfield was from the Oakpark Chicago area.

Both attended UW-Madison, and it was here, where ''Ethel met Harry" Sr. as both were UW Rowing Team Varsity members, at the Crew House off the premises of the Red Gym, both living on Fraternity, Sorority row on Mansion Hill. Mother Ethel was part of the family Hobbins Watrous and other ladies groups involved in the creation of the UW Girls Athletic Association. Harry Jr.'s aunt Grace Hobbins, a Tri Delt, founded the UW Girls Athletic Association.

Harry Jr. was commissioned as 2nd Llieutenant, USMC. His troop ship USS Henry R. Mallory was torpedoed and sank off by the Wolf Pack off Iceland while on route to England on Feb. 7, 1942. Harry survived the torpedoing of the USS Henry R. Mallory but died of exposure in the icy winter Atlantic seas. Harry was buried at sea. He is memorialized on the Wall of the Lost in England. Harry's parents are memorialized in the family's favorite place, Door Country, Wisconsin, with other family members.
