More About First Lieutenant Black

First Lieutenant Black was educated in the public schools of Atkinson and graduated from a local high school in 1913 before entering the University of Wisconsin.

After graduating in 1917, he was admitted to the First Officers’ Training Camp at Fort Sheridan where he was assigned to the 5th Company. Once he received his commission as Second Lieutenant, he was ordered to Camp Custer in Battle Creek, MI before moving on to Camp Greene, Charlotte, NC, and was then ordered to Camp Upton. While at Camp Upton he received orders to sail overseas with the 307th Infantry, with which regiment he was promoted to First Lieutenant.

He was killed by machine gun fire while leading his platoon near Fismes, France. First Lieutenant was commended for his heroism by the major of his company.
