Second Lieutenant Hankin enlisted in March, 1943. He was commissioned Bombardier-Navigator on October 23, 1943.

He saw action in the Normandy invasion and was killed in action over Germany. He had been listed as missing since June 20, 1944. He is now buried at the Ardennes American Cemetery in Neupré, Belgium.
