More About Ensign Carlin

While at the university, Ensign Carlin studied chemical engineering. He participated in fencing until his junior year before making the varsity fencing team his senior year. He was also a member of Beta Theta Pi. Ensign Carlin served aboard the Sims-class destroyer USS Anderson. The USS Anderson was tasked to conduct a diversionary bombardment of Wotje island while American troops landed at Kwajalein Atoll. At 0646 in the morning on July 30, 1944, a Japanese shell from Wotje struck the ship's combat information center, killing the captain and five others, including Ensign Carlin.
