Private Elton Earl Bussewitz enlisted into the US Army on Sept. 10, 1943, at Fort Myer, Virginia. He was sent overseas to Europe with Company A, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division. The 119th fought valiantly through France in the summer of 1944, following D-Day. They pushed up to Saint-Lô and prepared to push forward on July 25 after multiple failed attempts. This would prove to be one of the most devastating days for the 119th. As the 119th pushed into the German lines, confused Allied aircraft dropped their bombs on American troops. This combination of friendly bombs and enemy artillery and small arms fire was disastrous, more than 100 Americans were killed by friendly aircraft.
According to Bussewitz's hospital card, he was killed as a result of artillery fire. Private Bussewitz is buried at the Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown, Wisconsin.
