First Lieutenant George John Berg enlisted in the US Army on Aug. 26, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. He was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia, to complete Officer Candidate School. While there, he married Virginia March on March 6, 1943. He was sent from there to Camp Robinson, Arkansas. He was attached to the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division and was deployed to Europe. He fought through the Fall of Brest, France, and across the Rhine. On April 18, 1945, he was killed by a sniper's bullet outside of Leipzig, Germany. He is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Limburg, Netherlands. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantryman Badge. First Lieutenant Berg is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten, Netherlands.
