Private First Class Byron Roderick Bennett Jr. enlisted in the US Army on June 5, 1941, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his training at Camp Grant in Illinois, Camp Roberts in California, and Camp Murray in Washington. Bennett was sent to Alaska in February 1942. While at Yakutat, Alaska, he contracted hepatitis and died on Sept. 29, 1942. His body remained in Alaska until October 8, 1948, when he was reinterred at Greenwood Cemetery in Monroe, Wisconsin. Private First Class Bennett was the first man from Green County, Wisconsin, to die in the war.
