Private Paul Harry Barnes enlisted Nov. 16, 1942, in the United States Army. He was enrolled in the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's engineering department. He was sent overseas in September 1943 with the 324th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division attached to the U.S. 7th Army. Private Barnes was killed in action on Nov. 21, 1944, by enemy artillery in Avricourt, France. His brother, Staff Sergeant Hugh D. Barnes, died in France only a few months later in January 1945. They are buried together at the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial in Arches, France. They are one of 14 pairs of brothers interred together at this cemetery.
