More About Second Lieutenant Togstad

Second Lieutenant Morris Togstad was a writer and an American hero. While serving in the Wisconsin National Guard, he earned the French Croix de Guerre for gallantry in a bloody, difficult battle during World War I. On the day he was killed, rumors swirled that that the war was coming to an end. He wrote to his parents in Madison, Wis., "Although rumors of approaching peace were frequent, the activities about were such that the peace seemed as far away as ever." Later that day, a German plane dropped a bomb that ended the 21-year-old's life and left a family in mourning and the world less one courageous, talented individual.
