First Lieutenant Thompson graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's agricultural class in 1913. Some time after graduation, First Lieutenant Thompson was employed at the Department of Soils at the university.

First Lieutenant Thompson was sent overseas after completing training at the Second Officers’ Training Camp at Fort Sheridan. While overseas, he saw action and was wounded at the Battle of Château-Thierry.

He was killed near the Marne River.
