Before re-enlisting in 1917, First Lieutenant Roberts served as a private, corporal, and sergeant on the Mexican border. During the war he saw action in the Alsace-Lorraine sector, Belgium, and the Battle of Château-Thierry where he was cited for bravery.

First Lieutenant Roberts died of wounds at an American field hospital.
