More About Second Lieutenant Judkins

Second Lieutenant Judkins enlisted on September 12, 1861 as a Private with Company G, 1st Regiment, United States Sharpshooters (Berdan’s) from Fitchburg, Wisconsin. He was first promoted to Corporal and later promoted to 1st Sergeant. He was then commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on December 9, 1862 when another Lieutenant (Lt. Benson) resigned.

2d Lt. Judkins was killed on May 8, 1864 during the Battle of Todd’s Tavern. He was thrown from his horse due to a stray bullet while riding to the front to encourage his men to keep their position. His fall resulted in major head trauma that caused his death.
