Theodore Robert Hoyer

Lieutenant Hoyer was editor in chief of The Daily Cardinal and The Wisconsin Magazine, a member of White Spades, Iron Cross, Sigma Delta Chi, the Student Conference, the Y.M.C.A Cabinet and the Wisconsin Dramatic Society. While attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Lt. Hoyer was also a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduating, he accepted a position teaching English in government schools in Japan and Manchuria and worked with the Y.M.C.A. After several years in Asia, he returned to Wisconsin and was working towards an master's degree when the war broke out.

He applied and was admitted to the First Officers’ Training Camp and was assigned to the 5th Company. Upon completion of training, he was held over for the Second Officers’ Training Camp and was assigned to the 9th Company. Upon completion, he was ordered overseas and sailed Jan. 17, 1918. Then after a course in the A.E.F. School, he was assigned to the 6th Marines. He stayed with this regiment for two months before being transferred to the 23rd Infantry, where he remained until his death.

Lt. Hoyer was killed by enemy machine gun fire on July 18, 1918, at Château-Thierry.
