Leon Beck Hook

Flying Cadet Hook attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1913 and 1914 and later graduated from Harvard in 1916. He was said to be a brilliant student and authored several articles as the result of original historical research. He was valedictorian of of high school graduating class and graduated the age of 16. While at UW-Madison, he was an active member of the Hesparian Literary and Debating Society and the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Following graduation from Harvard, he supervised multiple branches of a bank but felt it was his duty to do his share when the United States entered war; he enlisted and was placed as the chief quartermaster's assistant. He was soon ordered to Seattle, Wash., and was to be named commander of his company when he died of pneumonia at camp at the age of 22. In a letter from his class to his mother following his passing, he was described as showing a "strict and true devotion to his duty" and possessing of "pluck and perseverance."
