Thomas Edward Maley Hefferan

At the university, Lieutenant Hefferan studied journalism and was said to be a poet of great promise. He was a junior when, five months before the United States officially entered the war, he left for France as a member of the ambulance corps. When the United States joined the Allies, he returned to Chicago and entered the Second Officers’ Training Camp at Fort Sheridan in November, 1917.

Upon receiving his commission, he was immediately sent back to France and stationed at Langres to receive further military instruction. However, he insisted he be sent to the front and in July 1918, he was assigned to the 126th Infantry of Company M.

Unfortunately, just one month later, he was shot and killed instantly in a skirmish in the Forêt de Jamblet near Château-Thierry. His body was buried by his companions in a wooded area near the resting place of Quentin Roosevelt.
