Private David B. Dryden was born in Illinois. He volunteered to join the 40th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 25, 1864. The 40th helped to repulse a Confederate attack on Memphis, Tenn., on Aug. 21, 1864. During his service, Private Dryden contracted a disease that resulted in his death on Sept.18, 1864, in Madison, Wis., only two days after his discharge from the Union Army.
